Mixxx e.V. is the legal body behind the Mixxx DJ Software. It is a nonprofit organization with the mission to lower the barriers to DJing worldwide and educate young talent in community-driven open-source development. We believe music, creativity, and technology should be accessible to everyone and not locked-in by costly subscription models or high tuition fees.

The e.V. was founded in 2025 by multiple Core development team members who agreed there was a need to protect Mixxx with a legal non-profit organization. The 'Articles of Association' is the result of a long process of discussion and co-working, and once they were finalized they were officially approved in a 'founding meeting' to which all core members were invited. During this meeting the members also elected a Board for the first 3-year term.

The Mixxx e.V. represents Mixxx in legal and financial matters. Having a non-profit entity allows the Mixxx project to collect donations directly, take advantage of reduced fees for certain services, and shields individual members from legal liability.

Mixxx Development Team and Mixxx e.V.

The Mixxx e.V. was founded by the Mixxx Development Team as a supporting organization, not a replacement. The e.V. does not affect how Mixxx is developed. While there is an overlap in the people involved, we keep the powerful and lovely chaotic development model where anyone can implement their own ideas for their own needs reviewed and when demonstrated to be useful to a wide range of users, merged by an experienced development team member.

Purpose of Association

Founded in 2025, The Association's officially described purpose is to promote art and culture as well as education and occupational training. The Association provides artists with the basic building blocks for DJ performances on a free and open source basis and advises them on the basics of digital DJ-ing as well as the implementation of unique extensions necessary for their personal artistic style. It also educates software developers in digital sound processing and online collaboration. For these purposes, it promotes and distributes free and open source DJ software, particularly the Mixxx DJ Software. This gives artists equal opportunities to start with digital DJ-ing regardless of financial means and allows software developers to review implementation details and contribute changes.

Association Goals

The association aims to:

  • Distribute Mixxx as a free and open source software to support educational, artistic, and cultural purposes.
  • Create manuals and guides to aid learning of digital DJing and further development.
  • Organize user support and education programs.
  • Offer software development internships for students who are mentored by experienced association members.
  • Build and maintain an inclusive and diverse community that supports the purpose of the association and welcomes contributors of all backgrounds, genders and ability levels beyond the members of the association.
  • The association provides the communication platforms and tools to promote collaboration and creativity and to enable easy access.
  • Support the development of Mixxx without exercising control over details unrelated to the association's rules and purpose.
  • Support the authorities with expertise in the DJ hardware and software environment (for instance in competition inquiries).
