Live Distro Containing Mixxx

Postby BdN3504 » Fri Jun 25, 2010 11:56 am

Hey there,
I was wondering if there is a live Distro which already contains mixxx and the drivers for all the controllers supported by mixxx. I am capable of compiling the source but i am not so well-educated when it comes to including drivers. I have a hercules dj console mk1 and am currently running mixx under windows. yesterday i wasn't able to use it though, because i connected the console to a usb port other than the one which was used for the installation. I didn't think about what i was doing and installed the drivers again for the console, using the automated windows driver installation procedure. since then i can't use my pc properly anymore... so I thought about an adequate way to keep me from running into such problems and have come to the conclusion that running a live distro containing mixx would fit my needs perfectly. Say, how much ram does mixxx need? because i thought it'd be more convenient if the distro could be loaded directly to ram so the boot media could be removed after that process.

If anybody was willing to create such a distro from scratch, I'd be glad to help.

Can you brief me on how hard it could be to include mixxx into an existing live distro myself? do i only need a distro which has a packet manager like apt?

Thanks for your support

We've been toying with the idea. See our wiki page on the topic: http://mixxx.org/wiki/doku.php/portable_mixxx

A couple of years ago I used to run Mixxx off an Ubuntu LiveCD and a USB key.

I just got all the packages that Mixxx needed to install on Ubuntu, and put them on a USB key. Then, after booting the LiveCD, I'd just install all those packages and Mixxx would run. I did a couple of gigs this way before I had my own laptop. :)

Since I couldn't wait I've just finished the 1.0 release of MixxxOS which is ready for testing :)

MixxxOS 1.0 is a minimal OS intended to use Mixxx so it includes very little applications, just enough to use Mixxx, install applications and update the system, open, copy and edit files and archives, connect to LAN and WLAN networks and browse the internet. Also it is possible to directly start Mixxx from the login manager so no desktop will be started and more RAM and CPU are left for mixing ;)

I used Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as the base system with GDM and openbox on top, there are multiple xsessions to choose from at login. It's possible to log into mixxx directly from GDM but there is also a "MixxxOS settings" session (Default) which logs into openbox. The system is configured to be used installed to a hard drive but can also be used as a livecd or usb (works with unetbootin). Since most of the codecs still have to be manually installed for legal reasons I've included an easy to use installation wizard to add the medibuntu repository and install extra multimedia support and other restricted programs but on some systems it seems to fail. In the next release I will include a more stable script or synaptic-file to install the codecs, for now have luck with the medibuntu wizard or just use synaptic to install gstreamer plugins {good | bad | ugly} or just install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package to pull in multimedia support and the adobe flash player, java plugin and Microsoft fonts.

The live system was build using Remastersys wich is included on the cd and can be used to build your own livecd including the restricted codecs for example.

This is still a test release but it won't blow up your computer, most bugs are only cosmetic things like a nicer boot splash, a gdm theme and updating the help file.

If you think something is missing or like to share your ideas please notify me here or sent me a pm.
If there are open source drivers that you would like to see included in the next release please sent me a link to the sources or debs.
The next release will also include a soundconverter, flac and OGG support (I know... how could I forget!!??)
Some people reported an error when firts starting mixxx, to solve this completely remove the hidden folder .mixxx located in /home/mixxx

Downloads: MixxxOS 1.0 x86 (32 bit), md5sum (OFFLINE)

Nice! You should update the portable mixxx wiki page to include a link and info about it.
The Mixxx Manual, Wiki and FAQ are the best place to start for documentation and support.

I will update the wiki as soon as I've finished the 1.1 release wich will include all missing stuff, dropbox and a different installer for the codecs, think I'll just make a deb meta-package and a launcher to install using gdebi for not everyone will like to use the full restricted-extra's.

Maby I'll finish it tonight otherwise tomorow so the wait won't be long :)

UPDATE: New iso is being created as I type, hope to upload it in an hour or two if it works out. so if you are new to Ubuntu better wait till the 1.1 release is uploaded for it will save you some hassle and headaches.

Fixes: added new codec installer that also includes soundconverter and oggconvert as they seem to pull in all restricted codecs, dropbox installer, language installer/config, flac support and becouse I didn't forget libdjconsole the first time I didn't install it five minutes ago together with the Hercules djconsoleMP3 drivers  Firefox plugins: Downthemall and Xmarks. Also made some changes here and there to remove some error messages and now it's just a matter of waiting, checking, testing and uploading :? my favorite part :?

@Gary: it includes the latest stable Mixxx version 1.7.2

@socialdefect

I've just burnt and ran the LiveCD and I'm loving it, but not able to play any music yet lol as the HDD with my music on is in work. I'd love to see this working with the next 1.8.0. release due sometime this week.

Sat waiting to see 1.1.

Great work, Keep it up.

So exciting!!! I joined this forum specifically because of this news.

I've been building a distro that was based off of Crunchbang #! , with the liqourix kernels installed for the ultimate in low latency. Would you also be interested in collaborating on a live CD version of it? Its based off Debian, not ubuntu but should still be familiar.

I also had some questions regarding the distro you are spinning up. What, if any, low latency mods have been done to the kernel?

Regards,
-L
