Simplicity Skin (Work in Progress)

Postby davidb2002 » Mon Nov 18, 2019 7:49 pm

I've been working on modifying the Deere skin to make it a more minimal design, but with all the same features.

Before moving to Mixxx, I used Serato Lite, which I really like the interface of. It's simple, clean and minimal. I think that is some of the issues with the current Mixxx skins on offer, they provide plenty of features, but not very visually pleasing.

Attached is a work in progress screenshot. I've changed the crossfader and vertical slider backgrounds and controls. I want to change the knobs to be something more like serato, but finding it a bit difficult to grasp the different layers at the moment. I also hope to move the waveforms below the mixer+deck. As well, I want to increase the height of the waveform shot on the deck and group all the buttons a bit nicer.

Looking for feedback so far! Thanks!

I've only used Mixxx/Serato with a DJ Controller. For that reason, I'm more inclined on designing this skin towards those users with controllers (ie: not many on screen buttons). I'm thinking, it's more of a HUD (heads up display) for DJs. What do others think?

That's exactly the reason I started hacking LateNight some years ago, when it still had the waveforms in the mixer. The result is Tango :)

What exactly do you need on the screen?
Did you try the minimal decks in the official skins (master, 2.3 alpha)? Hit spacebar to get a maximized library and decks with the bare essentials. This works in all skins.
You could look into each skin.xml and replace deck.xml with deck_small.xml (different template name sin each skin, though) to also have the Fx, samplers or Mic sections.

I think the hardest thing I have found to grasp is the knobs layout. There seems to be a few layers, but none which will allow me to do visuals similar to Serato, where it fills a ring.

You can be the first to implement the new skin feature introduced in https://github.com/mixxxdj/mixxx/pull/2275
There's an example in the description.
Though now it works easily only for knobs with an aspect ratio of 1:1, and the pointer offsets are not considered when the arc is drawn.

And if you look into the Shade source you'll find the oldschool way to do this: a number of arc images for the rotation steps.

WOW! brilliant! defo going to jump on that. I did see the old arc images, kind of put me off the idea. But now we have some new toys, I might give it a whirl.

Yeah, go for it!

In case your somehow fit in c++ it would be great if you could help resolving the arc issues I dscovered https://github.com/mixxxdj/mixxx/pull/2 ... -553625123
I think this shouldn't be to hard, just some math ;)
