Really small skin (480*320)

Postby b_a_t » Mon Aug 06, 2018 4:53 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm slowly getting into Mixx and I'd really like it to run on a Raspberry Pi, so far so good but I just installed a tiny 3,5" screen with a resolution of 480*320 and I was wondering if anybody had already done a skin for such a small screen (some kind of reminder/checker/browser more than a proper skin as I use a controller with so many LEDs I could even run Mixxx headless... if I knew all my playlists).
I'm a total noob in coding, I started to take a look at https://www.mixxx.org/wiki/doku.php/creating_skins yet any help would be welcome !

Thanks

This is a neat idea. AFAIK no one has made such a skin before. It would be a lot of work because the design would be very different from any skin designed for laptop screens.
I heard FLAC and I haven't gone back.

Mixxx 2.1 allows to scale the GUI by 0.5 does this work for you?
It there an issue with the preferences GUI?

A small screen requires a completely different design. Simply scaling down a design made for larger screens wouldn't be usable.

hello,
Thank you all for your nice replies !

I did not see my Mixxx version was 2.0 (and seems to be the latest available on a RasPi), using a 480*320 resolution doesn't even let you access preferences (even using the keyboard shortcut they are out of the frame), I shall try to compile the latest version following this :
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11910

and then maybe try to set all preferences to my taste before modifying the kernel to install the 3,5" screen...

I tried on Mac OS and setting the scale to 50% seems to give a 505*275 resolution. I'll first try this before going any further, will let you know how it fits !

Hello !
I successfully build Mixx 2.1.2 on a RPi 3B, RealTimeKernel, did all preferences modification before installing the 3,5" screen driver, set scale to 50%, in full screen mode, i just miss half of tempo faders for decks 2 and 4 (but I don't need them so it will be OK)

Thanks again for your tips !

Do you have a screen with or without touch? I am currently looking at a GPD WIN 2, which has a 720x1280 screen, but the screen is only about 5.5/6".
And I know the C1 variant of the PI screen has resistive touch.
But I think our problems are almost in the same league... Smaller screens, no (real) keyboard, except for the controller.

If you really only need a tracklist, I would just rotate the screen and make it almost dedicated for file browsing. Personally I still like to see the wave forms.

I'd suggest researching how the screens work on the Denon SC5000 and Pioneer CDJs for ideas of how to design the interface. You may get some ideas from the Native Instruments Kontrol S5 and S8 too.

I do have a touch screen but everything is too small and the touch screen resolution not precise enough to be used (I manly use it to browse and search tracks in the library, otherwise the screen acts more as a reminder... just in case), actually I don't even feel turning a knob on a touchscreen.
Apart from some mapping issues, so far so good

Nice, you cracked the Midi Fighter Twister and added controls.
Are you running this setup from batteries?
If not, could you? The speaker has its own battery, and I guess the Pi would run quite a while with a few 9V blocks in parallel.
Stuff all that into an old compact suitcase... et voila!

I already recommended this to @Joren Lauwers who runs Mixxx with DIY plywood vinyl controllers and I guess you'll like it as well (if your setup isn't based on this already):
