Recommend Software to convert Video in Audio

Postby alanjones76 » Thu Nov 15, 2018 7:19 am

Hey folk,

I am looking for software or apps that can help me to convert my downloaded videos in Audio format.

Like MP4 in MP3 format etc..

I am looking for both type of software paid as well as free.

ffmpeg will allow you to extract the audio without touching the codec so you will get zero loss of quality. The quality of audio in the video stream is usually pretty poor though!

https://www.ffmpeg.org/

Check the Extract Audio examples here:

Note that you will have to determine the audio codec used and give it the correct extension for the exported file manually. At least as far as I know.... (Using VLC's Media Information is one easy way to do this or there are command line tools if you prefer.)

I am assuming these are videos provided by friends and people you know which you have the rights to. If your video are coming from Youtube or other similar streaming services there is a much better tool but I wont mention it here as we can not condone piracy!

VLC can do it all, but the ui can be a little tricky. You are looking to transcode (convert one compressed format to another). The down side with transcoding is that it's already compressed meaning you are at the mercy of what audio the video file gives you.

Personally I really enjoy MediaMonkey for the library maintenance and the transcoding options. Sadly not 100% free but honestly if you are willing to part with a few dollars for a really good media player, it's well worth it. I'm not affiliated with them in case anyone is wondering.

Note that FFMPEG allows copying audio out of a container file without transcoding it using the "copy" codec option, which doesn't result in any loss of quality from the original video file.
I heard FLAC and I haven't gone back.
