Intro and Outro behaviour in Mixxx 2.3

Postby abseits » Mon Jun 15, 2020 4:14 pm

Hello out there,
I am trying to understand the new intro + outro functionality in Mixx 2.3,
tested it for a couple of hours with AutoDJ but it is still unclear to me.
Most confusing is the effect of the Main CUE Point if it is not the same as Intro Start.
example 1: Intro Start and Outro End active (as default)
When the CUE is the same as the Intro start it does what I expect, the second Track is started when the Outro end meets the Intro start.
When the CUE is before the Intro Start, the second Track is started when the Outro end meets the Intro start, but the track will start at the CUE.

ex 2: Intro start and Intro end - Outro end
When Outro end meets Intro end the track will be started (at CUE point)

ex 3: Intro start and Intro end - Outro start
nothing happens at all, no transition

ex 4: Intro start and Intro end - Outro start and Outro end
When Outro start meets CUE the second track will be started,
very confusing !

ex 5: Intro start - Outro start and Outro end
When Outro start meets CUE the second track will be started,

ex 6: Intro end - Outro start and Outro end
When Outro start meets CUE the second track will be started,

The most confusing effects in AutoDJ are happening when the CUE and Intro start Point are not the same.
With further tests I found out, that these effects are NOT related to the CUE Point itself but to the start point of the loaded track. When I manually move the start point between CUE and Intro start I can see this very clear, the Outro marker starts the second track at the point where it is at the moment.
So, in my opinion the solution would be to set the start of the tracks in AutoDJ at the Intro and not at the CUE.

I ran the system with my VMS 4.1 on Win10 64 for about 5hrs and had no other problems.
Btw, thank you for encreasing the library search box.
I use Mixxx for 5 years now and liked it fom the beginning and it is still getting better,
Thank you developers for that great piece of work !

The main cue is not used by AutoDJ anymore at all. If you used the main cue to set the start point for AutoDJ in prior versions of Mixxx, there is a new option in the Deck preferences "Set intro start to main cue when analyzing tracks" to move to using the intro and outro cues. The tooltip for the AutoDJ mode combobox briefly explains how the modes work. We'll be publishing a blog post soon explaining how it works in more detail.

Hello Be,
thank you for the answer, what you describe is what I expected to see when using AutoDJ.
Everything I describe has the premise that the DJ needs the CUE at a different point than the Intro, eg. for live mixing vs. AutoDJ using the same track.

The effects that I see are very clear visible when the CUE is far away from the Intro. I load the same track many times into AutoDJ and look what happens with stacked waveforms

I tested this again with different settings and now I see a new behaviour depending if the CUE is before or after the Intro :
Test 1: the CUE is long before the Intro Outro
AutoDJ loads the tracks with CUE as start point.
Outro starts the second track which starts at the CUE

Test 2: the CUE is far behind the Intro Outro
Here I see nearly the expected behaviour, the Outro starts the Intro.
But: the visualisation with stacked waveforms shows something strange:
the tracks are loaded with CUE as start point.
When the transition is triggered by the Outro the track jumps to Intro and begins to play there.
When starting AutoDJ with this setting I hear in the very first track a short piece of music from the CUE before it jumps to Intro.

Test 3: the CUE is in between the Intro and Outro
The tracks are loaded with CUE as start point, triggered by Outro.
The Intro will not be played.
Here is a screenshots to see how i test that.

AutoDJ should seek to where it will start the transition when a track is loaded. If not, that is a bug. Please report this bug and include a screenshot of your Deck preferences.

Sorry, sorry, sorry,
that was my fault,
everything in AutiDJ works very fine !
I didn´t see the <track load point> option in the decks preferences page,
Since I changed that to <Intro start> everything works perfect.
Please excuse me for the confusion,
I think this thread should be closed or removed.

No, you have found a real bug. The track load mode should not interfere with AutoDJ!
